Affordable Dental Makeover
By Warren Peters
I have undergone many dental makeovers throughout my life. Root canals, bridges, extractions, crowns, gum surgery, and alot of other stuff I can't even pronounce. My first big ordeal was when living in Hawaii. Geez, those guys sure are expensive. But they used N20 and I got my choice of music. About as nice as a dentist visit could ever be. After my gum surgery the dentist was amazed at how quickly I healed. He asked if I did anything special to speed up the process. My answer was...raw fish and plenty of german beer. Who would have guessed? After many years of showing off my great smile I was in a bad accident. Ten of my front teeth were broke at the gum line. I could not afford to have another dental makeover, at least not in Hawaii. Then I became very sick and had to leave the islands to seek medical attention. I was very sad to leave my home in paradise. Ended up in California and was able to finally find a doctor who could figure out what was killing me. Even though my easy lifestyle was no longer possible, there was an upside. Affordable dentistry. But not in SoCal. I headed to Mexico. TJ to be precise. We parked the car in San Diego and walked across the border. Recommended procedure. Got a cab for five bucks and was at the dentist in a few minutes. I was amazed at how well equipt the examination room was. Holes in the wall and nothin fancy, but the dentist was trained at UCLA and had the latest technology. It seemed like I was finally going to get a dental makeover that I could afford. And I did. The broken teeth were surgically removed. A bridge was constructed and glued to my existing teeth. While we were at it, I had crowns put on some of my funky looking but usable teeth. The results were astounding. I had a nice smile once again and could eat anything I put in my mouth. I made seven trips to Mexico. Not counting gas and taxis, the total cost was 21 hundred dollars. About a tenth of the cost in the U.S. Amazing. When I was very sick and didn't have the money for medical bills, the state of California gave me free medical insurance which included dental. I couldn't work so I was nearly broke. I found a dentist close by that would accept my insurance. Of course they wouldn't do any cosmetic work. I had them do as much as they could but it wasn't enough. So we headed to TJ and visited a dentist that a friend told me about. He did the entire job and never charged me til he was finished. About seven months. By then I was able to scrape up the money by doing small jobs and making chairs and other items out of wood that people bought from me. There is hope for an affordable dental makeover.
